KEH or MPB?
That is the question. And some might even throw Ebay in there. Well, we’re are going to forgo Ebay for now. I’m sure everyone has their awesome “hit the jackpot” Ebay deals, along with the occasional Ebay horror stories. What most of us can agree on,….Ebay is a crap shoot. And it’s been years since they were a “community of sellers”. More like a corporate emporium these days. There are a variety of ways to buy/sell used camera gear that’s been tested by professionals so you know exactly what you’re getting. Hence, KEH and MPB. But,… is it worth the risk just to save some moolah? In the case of us Filmies, it’s pretty much a requirement. If it’s digital, you have a lot more options nowadays. Even in the used marketplace. I believe they have a new and improved digital model every 6 months. And some people just can’t help themselves in getting the latest and greatest. Happily, us analog guys fall less into that trap. (not always)
B&H and Adorama?
Probably your local camera shop would be your first option. But they usually have slim pickings, if your local brick and mortar hasn’t already become a fond memory. Unless you live in NYC, LA, etc. Sans that option, online is the way to go in the 21st Century. And while Adorama and B&H have always been purveyors of both Used and New gear, and very professional, they are usually a bit more expensive. And pay less for your old gear. Honestly, both were blocks from me in the 90’s, and I frequented them more than I care to admit. This was also before B&H became a “super store”. (they were a little shop on W. 17th St in NYC)
As Far as Ebay/Craigslist Go…
This is not to cut down Ebay. Quite the contrary. I just wouldn’t buy anything expensive on there these days. Maybe a little under $100 camera baubles, it’s just fine. I use it all the time. (filters, straps, bags, etc.)
Not a “Store”, Per Se…
Personally, I have actually been to KEH’s physical “storefront”, which is a building in an industrial park in Atlanta. With a small lobby/front desk. I was there many years ago to pick up a digital Canon G?. (sorry, don’t remember actual model) It was for an impromptu party, I didn’t live in Atlanta and I had no camera gear with me. It was just for a one day usage. I only remember it got the job done, I hated the camera, and KEH bought it back from me before I left. So I guess you could say I rented a camera from KEH. The people there were extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. And not one of them said “y’all”. 😁 Since then I have bought numerous things from KEH online, and even sold a few things. All have been pleasant experiences. Although I’ve never bought anything they listed as “UG”, (ugly), I have bought quite a few cameras and lenses listed as “BN”. (bargain) Honestly,….I don’t get it. All their bargain stuff I received looked “Excellent” or even “Mint-”. I guess my point is, they are very conservative with their grading. The only thing I’ve ALWAYS hated about KEH is they use stock images, and not an image of the actual product you’re buying. I suppose that is some kind of high volume business decision. However, having such an overly conservative grading system in place, in practice it doesn’t seem to matter much.
As far as MPB goes, I’ve never been to their physical location in Brooklyn, NY. (NYC) But any online product I’ve purchased from them was a smooth and easy process with fast shipping. I will say that, in my experience, KEH has much more in the analog realm, while MPB seems to be more in tune with newer digital gear. KEH also seems to have more weird old stuff, like maybe a Nikon SB-23 or Nikon SB-27. Stuff that’s just less in demand, and is not compatible with digital gear. As far as lenses go, they seem to be about equal. Also, if you’re in the UK or Europe, MPB does have other locations.
KEH is an Atlanta based, (Smyrna, Ga), 40 year vendor in the used camera gear space. They probably have the largest inventory of the all the other used camera stores. Especially film gear.
MPB is a Brooklyn, New York based used camera dealer. But do have European outlets. They exclusively deal used camera gear and have built a more seamless platform.
Selling Your Gear?
As far as selling, the process is pretty much the same on each. You put in what you’re selling along with your general appraisal of its condition, like ‘mint’, ‘excellent’, etc. Then you’re given a quote of what the company will pay you for that product. My general advice is to get quotes from both sites. Also, be aware, both sites assume your indicated condition to be accurate. So, both reserve the right to change quote if product is not up to snuff. Having said that, this happens a lot less than you would think. Just be honest in your grading.
So, KEH or MPB? Which is Better/Cheaper?
Both KEH Camera and MPB are highly recommended websites for buying used camera equipment. KEH has over 40 years of experience in the industry, and has established itself as a trusted source for photographers looking to sell/purchase pre-owned equipment. Both have an excellent reputation in the photographic community.
The reason both are better than an Ebay or Craigslist is because they employ professionals and have a rigorous inspection process. Every used camera/lens undergoes a thorough 10-point inspection, ensuring that it is in excellent working condition. This gives buyers peace of mind knowing that they are purchasing a product that has been carefully evaluated and tested.
Which one is “better”? Well, the better option depends on various factors, including your specific needs, the condition of the gear you’re looking for, and the current market conditions.
Here are some factors to consider for both KEH Camera and MPB:
KEH Camera:
- Longevity and Reputation: KEH Camera has been in the business for a long time and has a good reputation for quality and customer service.
- Wide Selection: KEH Camera typically has a large inventory of used camera gear, including a variety of brands and models. Especially ANALOG cameras/flashes/lenses. (pre Nikon “AI”, pre Canon EOS “FD”, etc.)
- Grading System: KEH is known for its detailed and conservative grading system, providing customers with accurate assessments of the gear’s condition.
MPB:
- Specialization: MPB focuses on more “digital” used camera gear, making them specialists in this niche.
- International Presence: MPB operates internationally, which can be beneficial if you’re buying or selling gear from different regions.
- Condition Reports and Warranties: MPB provides detailed condition reports for each item and offers warranties on many products.
Considerations for Both:
- Pricing: Prices can vary, and it’s a good idea to compare the prices of specific items you’re interested in on both platforms.
- Customer Reviews: Check customer reviews and experiences with both KEH Camera and MPB to get an idea of their service and reliability.
- Specific Gear Needs: Depending on the specific camera gear you’re looking for, one platform might have a better selection than the other.
- Selling vs. Buying: If you’re selling gear, compare the quotes or offers you receive from both platforms.
You can find more “Pro” reviewers than this guy on YouTube, but I just thought the opinions of a regular consumer would be more valid. Also, I’ve personally had the same experience with KEH’s “Bargain” rating
