Celebrities with Analog Brains?
Does it really matter who still prefers shooting film? Especially when it’s someone who has money to burn? Well, probably not. But it does make you curious as to why someone who can easily afford the best digital camera out there would even dabble in such an archaic endeavor. And I’m sure they all employ digital cameras when the need arises. But it makes you think. In a world where digital cameras and smartphones dominate, it’s rare to see anyone taking photos with film cameras these days, let alone celebrities. However, there are still a few stars out there who appreciate the beauty and process of traditional film photography.
One notable celebrity who is known for her love of film cameras is actress Kirsten Dunst. In a 2014 interview with W magazine, Dunst revealed that she owns several vintage film cameras, including a Leica M7 and a Contax T2. She even admitted to preferring the look of film over digital photography, stating, “Film just has a depth to it that digital can’t quite capture.”
All in the Family
Another actress who is a fan of film cameras is Zoë Kravitz, like her Dad. In an interview with InStyle magazine, Kravitz revealed that she often uses her father’s old film camera, a Canon AE-1, to capture memories on set and while traveling. She also appreciates the element of surprise that comes with film photography, as you never quite know how the photo will turn out until it’s developed.
Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski is another celebrity who has been spotted with a film camera in hand. In a 2018 interview with Vogue, Ratajkowski revealed that she often uses a Contax T2, which she describes as “one of the best film cameras ever made.” She also enjoys experimenting with different types of film, including black and white and expired film.
The Big Guns
Even some of the biggest names in photography still prefer to shoot with film cameras. Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz is known for using a large format film camera, the 20×24 Polaroid, to capture some of her most iconic images. In fact, she once stated in an interview with The New York Times that she prefers to use film for her personal work, as it allows her to slow down and be more deliberate with her shots.
Of course, these are just a few examples of celebrities who still appreciate the art of film photography. Other notable names include musician Lenny Kravitz, actor and director Spike Jonze, and actress Tilda Swinton. Whether it’s the vintage aesthetic or the tactile experience of using a physical camera, there’s no denying that there is still a certain allure to film photography that draws in people from all walks of life.
Jason Momoa’s Obsession
No, not the perfume. But maybe the most”analog psycho” of them all is Aquaman. Jason Momoa is not only a renowned actor, but he is also an avid photographer with a love for film cameras. Momoa has been known to capture candid moments of his family and friends, as well as capturing behind-the-scenes moments on film sets. He has even shared some of his stunning film photography on social media, much to the delight of his fans.
In a 2019 interview with Esquire, Momoa revealed that his love of photography began when he was a child, where he was taught how to use a 35mm camera by his mother. He has since then developed a deep appreciation for the art of film photography and has built an impressive collection of film cameras, including a fairly massive Leica collection. And even a Contax T3. In fact, I think only William Eggleston has a bigger Leica collection.
Momoa has also been known to collaborate with other photographers and artists on film projects. In 2019, he partnered with photographer Brian Bowen Smith to create a limited-edition book of black and white portraits taken with a large format camera. The book, titled “Bulletproof Picasso”, was a huge success and showcased Momoa’s talent for capturing stunning images on film.
In addition to his own photography, Momoa is also a fan of other film photographers. He has spoken about his admiration for the works of iconic photographers such as Ansel Adams and Richard Avedon, and often uses their photographs as inspiration for his own work. Momoa’s love of film photography not only showcases his artistic side but also highlights the enduring appeal of traditional film cameras in the digital age. Film cameras require a level of patience, care, and skill that digital cameras don’t necessarily demand, and this is something that Momoa clearly appreciates.
Jason Momoa is not only a talented actor but also an accomplished photographer with a passion for film cameras. His love for traditional photography highlights the enduring appeal of film cameras and showcases the artistry that goes into capturing a moment on film. His work is a testament to the beauty and importance of traditional film photography, and is sure to inspire a new generation of photographers to explore the world of film.
Of course there are a myriad of other celebrities who prefer film over digital, including Frank Ocean and his Contax T3, Zendaya and her Contax G2, Gigi Hadid and her disposables and Kendall Jenner and her Contax T2 here. And that doesn’t even include the serious celebrity/photogs like “My Name is Earl” star Jason Lee. I’m just encouraged and further inspired when I see more and more people going film. (or adding it to their repertoire) Let’s me know I’m not crazy. I think. 😳
